Over in Newtown Square, Aronimink Division 1 team was looking to make it three wins in a row over WCC, dating back to last year. WCC was missing three guys. Way and Aronimink split courts 2 and 4. Way’s previous 9th man award Vlatko, teaming up with Paul Ridder to taking a tough three setter over Pete Pijawka and Brendan Kirk on Court 2. Waynesborough’s Studnick and Ryan once again lose their grip on securing their first set of the season, this week to Parker Sherry and Gerry Farley.
With the match, all squared the former top WCC duo McAvoy and Oberly, put on their monkey suits and took the first two sets off of Sorrentino and Friel. On court 3, Jacobs and Reckmeyer were called up from the Minors (D-2) for a one night contract and pulled off a big win over the veteran D1 squad of Mr. “where is the special sauce this year” Bozentka and Cliff McLaughlin sealing the victory for WCC. After 22 consecutive team wins in the last two years, Aronimink has dropped their first two of the season.
Wallingford travelled down to Vic Mead and almost completed a complete sweep and dropped only a single set during the evening. Wallingford is shaping up to be the team to beat this season as their summer recruits continue to pay dividends in this early part of the season. At this torrid pace, Vic Mead will have won 16 sets by the end of the season. Vic Mead does not have any easy task next week, as they travel to Waynesborough in attempt to secure their first court. All eyes are set on the Studnick Ryan match as this could be Vic Mead’s best shot at winning a court in the month of October.
Greenville makes it two in a row as they took three courts off of Philadelphia Cricket Club. Marvin and Peppiatt won the battle of a match over Redpath and Hyde on Court 1. On Court 2, PCK’s Rexford and Harris took the first two off of Dana Walker and Chris Donoho. Courts 3 and 4 was where Greenville shined as they gave up a total of ten games in both matches.
There was a huge scare over at Philly Country Club against Overbrook as Tom Burt and John Adams took the second set against the always undefeated team of Pat and Patrick Nowlan. A call to arms was made to all residents of the nearby Gladwyne area that were willing to witness the fall of paddle’s Roman Empire. But in true Nowlan fashion, they quickly ran off six of the next seven games, putting everyone’s fears to rest for another week and keeping their unblemished record in check. On Court 2, Steve Hall teamed up with Eric Niessen in this weeks dismantling of Andrew Hocker and Gardner Walling dropping only five games in the process. P-Country’s Norm and J.D. topped that score by only giving up four games to Hondo and his partner not registered in the system (did he play by himself?). On Court 3, Peter Hill and Clay Hardon took all three sets from Eric Fay and John Phelan.
Kennett earned their first victory of the season over a very disappointed Martin’s 1 team. Kennett won the deciding 3rd sets on courts 2 & 3 and all three sets on court 4 to seal the W.
Merion’s cadre of Pro’s and crafty veteran’s were well prepared for battle as they took the first three courts to capture their first victory of the season in taking down Martins-2. After splitting the first two sets, Greg Eger and Chip Morrow won the third set over Aiden Busch and captain Dan Greenwood. On Court 2, Chas Burkhart and Jeff Lyon took all three sets off of Chris Packer and Jay Siegfied. On Court 3, Pascal Collard and Brian Crochiere won in straight sets over Carter Devol and Jay Wright. Martin’s only victory came on court 4, where a rejuvenated Brian Aguilar and partner and “Wildwood’s very own 1988 Marbles Champion” Jerry Biernie won a best of three sets over Dan Gallagher and Tim Kent.
