Yesterday was the a big test for the Patterson Club Open. The tourney made its debut as an NRT and as part of Region 2. The tournament had some of the best players in the country participating in its first year as a National Ranking Tournament. With both Men’s Open and Men’s B with full 32-size draws and lots of teams in the waiting list, the welcoming of Fairfield County into Region 2 could not have been any stronger. Both titles will remain at home, as local Fairfield County residents Brad Easterbrook and Lennart Jonason won the Men’s Open; while Rich Greene and Tom Kratky won the Men’s B.

Present at The Patterson Club was Rob Coster. After playing in the B draw, the former APTA Board Member and Region 2 President commented:

Now all other tournaments will have to top Patterson. The bar was set pretty high”.

The day began with matches scheduled for an 8:00 am start for both draws. Play started at eight different sites with all top seeds making it to the quarter finals. That’s when some of the seeded teams went down. In the B draw Randy Howie and Brian Quinn lost to the Cinderella of the tournament, Alain Decoster and Larry Garinger. The other seeded team that couldn’t make it to the semis was Javier Ferrin and Roger Randall. They fell to the hands of Bob Morse and Felix Yamasato.

In the NRT draw, the only seeded team that fell short of predictions was Nathan LeFevre and Patricio Misitrano. They lost to Juan Arraya and Michael Gillespie in a close match after Misitrano retired due to a strained muscle in his left calf. The score was 2-6, 6-4, 5-3.

The NRT draw semis featured former National Champion Michael Cochrane and former ATP Doubles World #1 Jared Palmer playing in their first tourney together. They faced Long Island Invitational Champions and #1 seeds Easterbrook-Jonason. The match went to three very exciting sets and ended with victory  for Easterbook and Jonason by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The second semifinal match also went to three sets. David Caldwell and partner Blake Cordish advanced after their victory over Arraya-Gillespie. Final score was 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

In the B draw two Milbrook Club teams reached the final match. The experience of Rich Greene and Tom Kratky was too much for Decoster-Garinger, who appeared to run out of gas after losing the first set in a tie-breaker. Greene-Kratky went on to win the second set by 6-0 and took home the title.
