Week 5 featured many important matches in the various divisions as, we head down the stretch to the end of the second half of the season. All week 5 results and current standings can be found here.
Division 1
As referenced last week, the big match this week was Greenburgh 1 at Bronxville Village 1. Headed into Tuesday night, they, along with New York Athletic Club 1, were tied for first place. GB 1 got the 3-2 win with wins at the 1,2, and 4 spot, and is now in a two way tie for first place with NYAC1. NYAC1 beat The Country Club of Westchester 3-2. Fox Meadow 1 got swept by Flint Park, and is in serious danger of going back down to d2, as they are now 3 points behind the next to last, Orienta Beach Club 1, with 5 points. Manursing 1 beat OBC 1 3-2 and featured the reigning national champs, Mark Parsons and Mike Stulac, at their 1 spot. The champs won their match, but it did go 3 sets.
Division 2
With Pelham Country Club 1’s 3-2 win over Bronxville Village 3, d2 has gotten very interesting. These two teams are now tied for first with 16 points each, and PCC1 has the tiebreaker advantage by virtue of this 3-2 victory. PCC probably has a tougher schedule in the last two weeks of the season facing Larchmont Yacht Club 1 and Bronxville Village 2, but there are no easy matches left in this division. LYC 1 should be especially tough, as they are in danger of going down to d3, after getting swept by the headless horsemen of Sleepy HollowVillage. With 10 points, LYC 1 is tied for last with Wykagyl 1, and is in danger of suffering a double dip. A double dip in this case refers to dropping two divisions in just one year. LYC 1 started the first semester in d1. Elsewhere, BV2 beat Scarsdale Village 1, 3-2, and Wykagyl 1 lost 3-2 to Scarsdale Golf Club.
Division 3
Siwanoy Country Club remains on a mission to get back to d2, and is comfortably in first place with 19 points, after a 5-0 sweep over Orienta Beach Club 2. New York Athletic Club 3 is in second place, with 15 points, after defeating Pelham Country Club 2 4-1. Shenorock is right behind with 14 points after taking 4 from Greenburgh 2. Larchmont Yacht Club 2 is fighting for it’s life with 8 points, after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Century Country Club. LYC 2 is tied for last with the aforementioned OBC 2.
Division 4
Larchmont Shore Club remains on top in d4 with 20 points after beating Beach Point 3-2. White Plains look like the only challenger to LSC with 17 points after losing 3-2 to New York Athletic Club 3. The race for last does not look like much of a race anymore, after Bronxville Village 4 swept Wykagyl 2, which leaves Wykagyl 2 at the bottom with 3 points. Elsewhere in d4, Bronxville Field Club took 3 from Ardsley Country Club.
Sean’s Corner
I have just received word from an impeccable source that next weeks matches have been cancelled due to Valentine’s Day. Not sure what this says about the state of the game. The weekend looks light on the tournament front, again perhaps because of Valentine’s Day. The one exception is the National Mixed Singles, aka the Hermaphrodite Open. Plenty of WPTL players will be playing in this, no reason to name names, you know who you are.
