After finally crawling out from under the debris left by hurricane Sandy, I am getting to the first week of coverage of the wild Westchester league. Like last year, this column will be a weekly wrap up of the top four divisions in the Westchester Platform Tennis League. The top four divisions all play on Tuesday night, while the rest of the divisions play on Wednesday night. All week 1 results can be found HERE.

Division 1

The top division featured some great matchups among established teams, and the introduction of new entrant Bronxville Village 3 into the big boys’ league. Reigning league champ, and playoff champ, Greenburg 1 faced off against a loaded Manursing Island Club 1 team in what could be a precursor to a playoff match in March.

The 1 spot featured the hottest team in the country of Juan Arraya and Lennert  Jonason of MIC 1 vs. Patricio Misitrano and Anton Mavrin for GB1. Arraya/Jonason, coming off back to back tournament wins at the Patterson and Atlantic Classic, found themselves in their toughest match of the year as they split the first two sets.  The only other team this year to take a set off this duo is National champs, Drew Broderick and Chris Gambino, who did this in the semifinals at the Atlantic Classic. After being down 4-2 in the third, Arraya/Jonason came back to win the third set in a tie breaker. MIC 1 split  the other spots and won the match 3-2.

Elsewhere, New York Athletic Club 1 beat Orienta Beach Club 1, 4-1, and Bronxville Village 1 beat Flint Park 1, 3-2.  Newcomer Bronxville Village 3 got a taste of division 1 and lost 4-1 to the Country Club of Westchester.  So after week 1, CCW and NYAC1 sit atop the division with 4 points each.

Division 2

Siwanoy Country Club 1 got off to a fast start after being promoted from division 3 last semester. In an effort to never get demoted to d3 again, as they did last fall, SCC1 went out and got top player Max LePivert to play at their one spot. LePivert delivered, as did the rest of the team, and SCC1 beat Scarsdale Village 1, 4-1. Sleepy Hollow Village also notched 4 points by beating Scarsdale Golf Club 1 by a score of 4-1.

In a battle of two former d1 teams, Larchmont Yacht Club 1 and Fox Meadow Tennis Club 1, LYC 1 came out on top 3-2. The final match in d2 had Bronxville Village 2 besting Pelham Country Club 1, by a score of 4-1. After week 1, there is a three way tie for first with SCC1, SHV, and BV2 all with 4 points.

Division 3

Shenorock came out of the gates fast with a 5-0 win over newly promoted (from d4), Larchmont Shore Club.  Shenorock, aka, Team Cochrane less Mikey C, is on a mission to get to d2 and beyond. Their biggest road block to d2 could be newly demoted (from d2), Wykagyl Country Club 1 who won 3-2 over Greenburgh 2. Elsewhere, Century Country Club beat Pelham Country Club 2, 4-1 and New York Athletic Club 2 and Larchmont Yacht Club 2 have yet to submit their scores (where is league commissioner on this?).

Division 4

Manursing Island Club 2 registered a 5-0 win over New York Athletic Club 3 to jump out to the early lead in d4.  Bronxville Village 4 beat White Plains 4-1, and is in second place with 4 points. Elsewhere, Ardsley Country Club 1 beat Bronxville Field Club 1, 3-2, and Orienta Beach Club 2 and Beach Point Club 1 have yet to report scores.
