The 45th edition of Mixed MAPTA concluded on a blustery but clear Sunday with the newly crowned team of Scott Falatek and Cooey Lyon taking down the many time Champions and brother – sister squad of Tim McAvoy and Laurie Hissey in two straight and very convincing sets.

For the first time in a long time, the Mixed MAPTA (“MM”) had 64 teams in the draw and with a week to go before the tournament was up to almost 70 teams. A team as far away as Bozeman, Montana made the 2,000 mile trek to play with some of the best and most fun couples to play and party with in the Philadelphia area and did not leave disappointed.

Not even mother nature’s storms just right before the start of play and right after the conclusion of play on Saturday could dissuade any team or the tournament director to make any changes to their plans for the weekend.

Waynesborough Country Club was the host club for the tournament and according to all there did a fabulous job of dolling out many pounds of delectable pasta to nearly 100 players which was ready to carbo load and quench their thirst with many gallons of Chip’s famous rum punch and other assorted beverages. The on-site massage therapist too had to take a break from the long line of awaiting guests needing to work out a few kinks from the 3, 4, and 5 matches played during the day.

Special thanks goes out to the sponsors whom along with the players and the host clubs allowed for a very memorable event. Our title sponsor this year was MacLaren Fabrication along with our other sponsors TastyKake, Blue Haven Pools by Calvitti, Peak Fitness, and 23K. The MM would also thank the host clubs Merion Cricket Club, Picket Post Swim Club, Aronimink Golf Club, Overbrook Golf Club, Martins Dam Swim Club, and Waynesborough Country Club for allowing us to use their courts and making sure everything was ready regardless of what Mother Nature had up her sleeves on Thursday night.

In our “A” consolation, Fred Jacobs and Sue Barnes defeated Justin and Ali Harper. In the “B” Consolation Fazel Syed and Ali Tross defeated Paul McCabe and Lisa Ashley and finally in the “AR” consolation, Bob Zegal and Cathy Holskin defeated Scott and Alicia Buck.

Tournament director’s Keith and Denise Studnick were excited that everything went off so smoothly and with the addition of at least 2 new paddle courts being built in the area, would like to see the tournament grow even larger in 2013. Tournament director, Keith Studnick stated that “I wouldn’t be surprised if we get close to 100 teams for the 50th anniversary which is only 5 short years away.”
