Things are already flying along here in the Chicago area, and though the weather remains relatively warm, and though the area has gotten quite a bit of rain over the last couple weeks . . . all of which has made paddle play a bit tough . . . all 25 series are off to a fast start. Here’s a look back at week #2.
Series I –
Onwentsia and Salt Creek hooked up for a great early-season match with three out of the four courts going a full three sets. Court #1 saw Onwentsia’s Brian Uihlein and Brad Smith beating Salt Creek’s Paul Garvin and Charlie Usher 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Mike Marino and Rod Workman won in three on court #2 over Jack Martin and James Goldman 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to help Onwentsia to a 9-6 victory.
Series II –
Mid Town and Glenview squared off against one another with Mid Town barely coming out on top 7-6. Some of the best action of the night was on court #3 where Mid Town’s team of Kevin Kaspers and Stephen Schubert lost to Glenview’s Scott Cozad and David Williams 4-6, 6-4, 2-6. The point that Kaspers and Schubert picked up by winning a set helped Mid Town gain the one point victory.
Series III –
Mid Town’s III team had its hands full against Five Seasons with two of the courts going three sets. Once again the best action of the night was probably on court #3 where Mid Town’s Pat Leydon and partner Tim Murphy held on to beat the Five Season’s duo of Ron Dim and Andrew Winick 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. The match lasted well over 90 minutes thanks to Dim’s steady play and Winick’s offense. However in the end Leydon and Murphy proved too tough, and the Mid Town team came away with a 9-5 win.
Series IV, V, VI –
Though there were probably better overall team matches in Series IV last week, one of the best individual matches of the week came in the Knollwood vs. Five Seasons match where Knollwood’s Matt Stiltz and partner Mike Conley took on Five Seasons’ Ryan Keck and Peter Greulich. The match started in perfectly dry conditions, and ended almost two hours later in a down pour with Stiltz and Conley hanging on to a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 victory. Keck’s lefty drive down the middle gave Stiltz and Conley almost nowhere to go with their overheads and Stiltz’s volley’s at the net were boarding on criminal. It was a fantastic match to watch. Knollwood won the match 9-4.
Series VII, VIII, IX –
The Skokie vs. Winnetka match at Series VIII proved to be an exciting one. Winnetka and Skokie split the first two courts which meant the match came down to the action on courts #3 and #4, and BOTH went three sets with Winnetka winning the third set on each court. Skokie’s Jay Costley and Kevin Shrier lost on #3 to Winnetka’s Mark Saperstein and Jonathan Fiegan 2-6, 6-4, 3-6 while Skokie’s Mike Miller and Bruce Williamson lost on #4 to Winnetka’s David Kirby and Tony Goosmann 7-5, 4-6, 5-7.
Series X, XI, XII –
There was plenty of action at Series X last week with two matches ending with 8-6 scores, and one ending with a 6-6 tie. One of the 8-6 matches was the Hinsdale PD vs. Salt Creek match. Hinsdale came away with the 8-6 victory, but Salt Creek’s won the battle on court #3 where Mike Berg and partner Chris Schuleit beat Hinsdale’s Jerry Klingenberger and Mark Robinson 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Series XIII, XIV, XV –
Lake Forest and Saddle & Cycle “kissed their sisters” with a 6-6 tie. All four courts were decided in straight sets with Lake Forest winning courts #1 and #2 while Saddle & Cycle won courts #3 and #4. Lake Forest’s court #1 duo of Chris Longeway and Jason Perlioni beat David Fox and Don Eugenio 7-5, 6-0.
Series XVI, XVII, XVIII –
North Shore and Sunset Ridge faced off in Series XVII last week with North Shore coming out on top 9-4. They won courts #1, 2 and 3. Sunset Ridge’s court #2 team of Bill Metzger and Duane Erickson put up a good fight against Allen Ashley and Cy Oelerich forcing a third set. Ashley and Oelerich prevailed in the end winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Series XIX, XX, XXI –
Tennaqua and Northmoor played to a 6-6 tie in their Series XXI match. Tennaqua won the odd courts while Northmoor won the even courts. Tennaqua’s Jeff Kent and Brian Hanover won on court #1 against Adam Rosuck and Steve Schaumberger 7-6, 6-1.
Series XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV –
And Hinsdale GC is off to a blazing hot start in Series XXV after beating Green Acres 12-0 last week. Mike Kwasigrogh, Scott Seyfarth, Chris Behrens, Victor Galati, Mark Lozier, John Caruso, Peter Vexter and Jim Delany were all straight set winners. Welcome to Series XXV guys! Keep this up and you’ll be leaving Series XXV in your rearview mirror.
