The Country Club of Virginia once again served host to one of the Region VII’s premier tournaments, The Games on the James. The tournament played out largely to plan with 3 of the 4 top seeds reaching the semi-finals. In the first semi-final tournament favorites, Andy Todd and Trevor Spracklin, cruised to an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over D.C star Juan Jaysingh and partner Brendan Flurry.
The first upset, on paper that is, came in the bottom semi where the surprisingly unseeded team of young Philly kids Tom McAvoy and David Hissey took down the number two seeds, Charlottesville’s Mark Tulenko and Atlanta’s Graham McNerney. The match was a close fought 6-2, 7-6 where the steadier team prevailed.
This set up for an interesting match of contrasting styles between the patience of the Philly team, against the impressive athleticism of Spracklin and the crafty veteran Todd. Spracklin and Todd grinded their way to a close first set victory of 6-4. There was no slowing them down as they broke their opponents down to take the tournament with a second set score of 6-1.
This marks the 6th year in a row that Andy Todd has won the tournament and each victory shared with a different partner, a very impressive feat.
