The Patterson Club Open kicked off the season yesterday in Fairfield County with tremendous success. The new Women’s NRT/PCQ event had 18 teams participating while the Men’s NRT/PCQ was oversubscribed and the Men’s B draw was a hit, just like the last 12 years. The crowd gathered on the side of the road at The Patterson Club and many said that it was the largest seen at any tournament in the East Coast in the last five years. With over 250 people watching the players enjoyed the excitement of the fans.
Juan Arraya and Lennart Jonason won the Men’s NRT draw with their win over Drew Broderick and Steve DeRose by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Although their was some doubt on DeRose’s health before the final due to some dizziness, the match was played and completed. Arraya and Jonason were the better team from beginning to end and were in control the entire match. At 6-3, 5-2, 40-0 the match seemed over but Broderick-DeRose attempted a come back to get the score to 5-4. The champions were then able to close the match and finished the tournament without dropping a set. This was Jonason’s second title in a row at Patterson. In 2011 he won the tournament with Brad Easterbrook as a partner.
The NEW Women’s NRT/PCQ event had some of the best players in the country in the draw and some of the best local talent too. Lauren Mandell and Kerri Delmonico faced Sue Tarzian and Liz Jaffe in the final match. Jaffe and Tarzian had a great start and won the first set 6-1. Delmonico and Mandell then recovered and the battle was on. Kerri and Lauren ended up winning the last two set 6-4, 7-5 and were crowned as the first Champions of the Women’s NRT event.
The Men’s B Draw is a classic now. This year the talent was superlative and a lot of the “B” teams could have easily win matches in the NRT draw. Next year some of these players should sign up faster so they can get a spot in the Big Boys draw. Which one was the team that won it all? Scott Hapgood and Ian Lindsay played a great tournament and won their first title together. In the final match they defeated Bryan Adinolfi and Bryan Rodgers by scores of 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. It seems like the all night practices that Hapgood and Lindsay had at Innis Arden paid off!
