Singles Rules and Overview

Singles has a long history in the sport of platform tennis with the first National Championships being played alongside of the first doubles championships in 1938. The National Singles Championships were last played in 1999 and with this fifth anniversary of the Eastern States, we and the APTA are looking forward to the eventual return of the National Singles Championships to the tournament calendar.

Our efforts are being supported by a number of organizations, including the APTA, leading platform tennis manufacturers, a number of the leading doubles players in the country, past Singles Champions, and others who appreciate the excitement, athleticism, pace and enjoyment of singles paddle.

Rules for singles are the same as in doubles, except for three exceptions:

  • Each player receives two serves.
  • No-ad scoring is used throughout – receiver chooses which side to receive at 3-all.
  • The singles sidelines are used.

Lunch & Favors

Lunch is included on Saturday at the Greenwich Country Club, and, as always, and the best tourney mementos in the business for each participant.

The order in which one registers will have an impact on memento preferences, so be sure to sign up early. Being the innovation tourney we have a couple of new twists for you – think of us as the Southwest Airlines of the paddle circuit. You get more choices if you are first in line!

Sponsors

We are particularly pleased to acknowledge the strong support from our corporate friends, some who have been with us since our founding and a slate of supporters worthy of a national tournament.

Sqwincher Coorporation will supply us with plenty of electrolyte replacement beverages as they have since our inception. Swincher, a leading provider of activity drinks to the industrial market where dehydration in the workforce is a critical productivity issue, has shown significant inroads into the sports market, not because of advertising dollars, but because of innovative packaging, significant depth of product line, largest variety of flavors in the industry, better tasting, and better “science.” More information about Sqwincher can be found HERE. Expect Sqwincher to surprise us with something new during the tournament.

Center Court Tennis has been a sponsor for several years, and owner Nick Bergman will be a key participant in the tournament, looking to defend his national ranking. Center Court is a full service racquets shop located in the New Canaan (CT) Indoor Tennis Center, providing a broad range of products and service, including home delivery. Additional information on Center Court can be found HERE.

We are pleased to announce that PaddleTimes has joined the Eastern States lineup as a key new sponsor, hosting this webpage and online registration process. PaddleTimes is the best way to follow the platform tennis action. Complete coverage of Women’s and Men’s National Ranking Tournaments, B Tournaments, Mixed Tournaments, Local events, and League play.

It is great to have Wilson Sporting Goods back with the Eastern States for 2012. Wilson, and its regional representative, Sarah Maynard, have always supported the Eastern States in a number of ways and their sponsorship involvement will be increased substantially in 2012. Be on the lookout for Wilson and its broad line of products to be very visible during the tournament and throughout the year on the paddle court. Be sure to check out the new lineup of Wilson rackets during the tournament. More information on Wilson’s platform tennis line can be found HERE.

Lakewood Capital LLC has been with us since our founding and provides significant administrative and financial support throughout the year. Lakewood was formed to team with operating management to make control investments in private companies active in the lower middle market. Lakewood targets businesses that have developed a strong position in their core markets and are facing opportunities/challenges/transition as they move toward the next stage of their developments. Lower middle market businesses often reach a point where their existing resources, be they financial, operational or human, need to be expanded, adjusted and/or reallocated to continue to prosper. These times often occur when founding management seeks less active involvement, new market opportunities arise, growth outstrips current capacity, and/or the competitive landscape changes. Lakewood prides itself on partnering with existing management to capitalize on these times of transition, with the mutual goal of building stronger, more dynamic, more competitive operations in the process. Lakewood’s strategic influence coupled with management’s operational expertise, brought together in a collaborative environment, has been a strong model during any business cycle. More information can be found HERE or by calling Roger Knight, at 203-604-0863 (rknight@lakewoodcap.com).

Additional sponsors are expected to be announced shortly, and there are still some sponsorship opportunities available. Please contact Roger Knight if you have any interest.
