2013_Patterson_Final_ViewWe can now say that the 2013-2014 season is here and what a showing! Two out of the four players who participated in last season’s Nationals final were on court. A lefty on the add side, two handed backhand and two handed forehand drives, top spin over heads, slash overhead, waterfall overheads, push overheads, etc, etc, etc. All four players put on a great show.

Drew Broderick and Steve Derose were coming back to Patterson after falling short in last year’s final. This time things were different and they came to play, specially in their last two matches of the tournament. Both teams reached the final after two semis that looked like a walk in the park. The New Jersey duo barely sweated to beat Mavrin-Misitrano by 6-2, 6-1. Lots of errors on one side and steady play on the other side made for a quick match and a Broderick-Derose ticket to the final.

The other semis showcased defending champs and #2 in the nation Arraya-Jonason versus Johan du Randt and Jeff Morneau. This was another disappointing semis as many of the fans who came to watch (as far as Long Island) were expecting a closer match. A 6-1, 6-2 gave du Randt-Morneau their spot in today’s final.

Broderick-Derose took an early 4-2 lead in the first but their opponents stepped up and won four games in a row to take the first. In the second set, the eventual champs cut their errors to almost none and won the set 6-2 after playing amazing points after amazing points. The uhhhhss and ahhssss followed woooows and claps pretty much after every point.

In the third set Drew and Steve broke Johan’s serve to take another early lead of 3-0. Morneau held his serve to go 1-3 after a very long game that put them back in the match. Another break, when Derose lost his serve at 4-2, gave du Randt-Morneau the chance to level things out. But they couldn’t. Yet another break put du Randt serving at 4-5. Guess what? Yes, another break of serve and Broderick-Derose won the tournament.

The rest of the tournament did not have many upsets other than perhaps Mavrin-Misitarno taking down LePivert-Stulac in the quarters. One more time The Patterson Open delivers and gets lucky with great weather and the best courtside BBQ in the country, hands down!

2013_Patterson_Mens_B_FinalistsThe B Draw saw father and son Steven and Jay Schwab taking down the title with their win over Alain De Coster and Larry Garinger. The Milbrook duo of De Coster-Garinger were playing in their second B Draw final in the last three years. They may have to wait another year to bring home the big W. This time around the Schawbs were too much for the competition, only losing 6 games on their way to the final where they won by 6-2, 6-4. Impressive!
